Total fitness

It seems that everywhere you look nowadays there are new exercise fads that promise great results to help you thin down, tone up, lose weight, and become a better you.  There are diets where you shouldn't eat meat, shouldn't eat vegetables and fruits, drink shakes, don't drink anything white, and only eat things that can be grown in a cow pasture (okay, not sure about that last one but I have heard about the others) all in an attempt to lower your cholesterol, burn fat, improve your heart health and live as long as possible.  This has become such a push in our society that it has become a multi-million dollar industry.  I wonder, sometimes, what this world would be like if there was as much of a push to work on the inner part of ourselves.  No, I'm not talking about your guts, heart, kidneys, liver. I'm talking about our immortal souls.  Imagine if there was a drive in people to get out and improve our spiritual standings each and every day.  Imagine if there was a push to be just a little kinder tomorrow to the people we may encounter just as we push ourselves to run just a little further (okay, so I don't run but you get the picture).  Imagine if we were more cautious about the images our eyes behold that feed our souls as much we are looking at labels for nutrition information and counting calories.  Imagine if instead of feasting on mundane and uninspiring media events which weight the soul down we researched and found the best books, movies, poems, and paintings that lift and inspire us to greater knowledge and wisdom.  I honestly and truly believe that if we as a society would put half as much effort into exercising our souls as we did our physical bodies, we would begin to see less violence, less hatred, and the miracles of simple and kind gestures would begin to fill the world around us.  Of course to see these societal changes, we all need to start with the person staring back at us as we glance in the mirror to see the progress our latest fitness craze gotten us.  I would hope and pray that I can begin to look not only in the mirror of the physical realm (which isn't a pretty sight right now), I can begin to look into the mirror of my soul and begin to see improvements there as well.  For ultimately, I don't believe standing at the judgment bar of God, He will ask if I followed the Atkins, Paleo, or Vegetarian diet.  I to believe He will look upon my soul and ask, "Did you follow me?"
