The sights around
Christmas are beautiful, true.
With the lights and the
tinsel and Christmas trees too.
The candy canes striped
with red and with white,
The carolers singing all
through the night.
The ribbons and bows found
topping the gifts
The church Christmas
program that warms and it lifts.
The greetings from
strangers to me and to you,
“Merry Christmas to you
and your family too.”
Sing loudly their praises,
our spirits inspire.
The stores all stocked
with the latest surprises
Found under the tree as
the family arises.
On the TV the specials
abound
Sharing stories of
Christmas spirit they've found.
News stories follow that
jolly Saint Nick
As he travels the world,
nimble and quick.
Sometimes in this chaos of
seasonal joy
As we think of the latest
and greatest new toy
It's easy to see how we
can let slide
The story of Christmas
from the spiritual side.
The story is simple, the
cast is well known
Traveling far to a big
crowded city
No place to stay, for they
found no one's pity.
Placed in a stall where
the animals lay
Long long ago, on that
first Christmas Day.
The place was not flashy
but humble and mild
Where first made His
entrance, the dear sweet Christ Child.
Only one great
announcement was made on that day
To simple dear shepherds
in fields where they lay.
Not to kings nor to rulers
did the angels appear.
But to humble sweet
shepherds they beckoned, “Come near”
And there gave praises for
the gift to them all.
For without all the lights
and the tinsel and trees
They reverently each got
down on their knees
They worshiped an infant
they knew was the king
Who brought salvation to
each living being.
Who one day would the
greatest gift give
His own very life, that
all men may live.
When things get hectic and
we lose all our reason
I hope we find, when
things aren't so wild
We quietly stop and think
of the child.
And as he would teach us
to serve one another
That we are all family,
sister and brother
That we listen to hear the
sweet whispers above
That remind us that
Christmas is truly about love.
